It's the start of a new journey for the lad as he stood outside professor Elm's lab, the boy a tad more nervous due to not having his little mouse friend around him. Aside from the apprehensive Andy, the day itself is fairly brisk though the wind isn't too heavy, the temperature being just enough that Andy had to wear a windbreaker so as not to catch a cold. "Come on Andy, you already made the whole trek from your home to New Bark, going through the door shouldn't be too hard." It took him staring at the doors for a solid five minutes before he actually headed inside, his main thought being like every starting trainer, "Which pokemon should I choose?" Surely all the starters had their own quirks each was as good as the next, as such he didn't have too much of a preference for now. That could change once the starters appear.
Like every morning where new trainers were scheduled to come and select their first pokemon, it was a chaotic one. Rush over here and do one thing, rush over there to do another. The laboratory was severely understaffed and trying their best to keep up with the demand. Lately it seemed like many new trainers were interested in starting their journeys and the Professor just wished he could spend more time with each of them and build a relationship. The ones that would one day become scientists or researchers tended to want to pry out some of the professor's knowledge a bit before they left with their new partners.
Typing away at his computer, click clacking the keys on the mechanical keyboard he didn't hear another trainer walk through the door. It wasn't until one of the aides tapped him on the shoulder, making him jump straight up in his seat, his glasses bouncing atop the bridge of his nose, that he swirled around and locked eyes with the piercing icy colored ones of this young trainer. "Oh why hello there young man! Do you happen to be here to select your first pokemon?"
Standing up from his swivel chair, the professor semi-tripped before getting close enough to the trainer to extend a hand. "I am the pokemon Professor of Johto, Professor Elm. Who might you be?" A smile pursed his tiny lips, excited as he always was to sprout a new trainer. Secretly, the professors always loved new trainers because it meant opportunities for potential new research. Each time a new trainer passed through could be the time a trainer filled their pokedex. Oh how one wished.
As Andy went through the doors his eyes met aides dashing all over the place in a sort of controlled chaos, several aides going in many different directions doing many different things, the hustle and bustle being rather foreign to him being from much slower paced Mahogany town. Andy just watches these aides for the moment before eyeing the professor, who was currently typing away at his keyboard. He didn't dare interrupt him as it had to be something important as is most of the work professors did.
An aide tapped him and caused Elm to turn around and ask if he was here to pick his first pokemon, "Yes sir, I am, the name is Andy Richter. Nice meeting you Professor Elm." he answered keeping eye contact and trying to come off as confident but sounding the opposite. "What kinds of pokemon can I choose to start if sir?" very curious as to what they were.
This young trainer presented himself as Andy. He seemed slightly older than the usual trainers that came through here but still on the younger side from the sorts of trainers that had recently left the lab. At the inquiry of pokemon choices, the professor extended his arm outwards to the right with his palm facing up. "This way if you will." He brought them to the next room which housed a table with four what seemed like holes in a table.
Walking towards the back end of the table where many machines were hooked up into the wall, tons of cables dangling disorganized, the professor pressed a button and four pokeballs rose from under the table. One with a leaf symbol etched on the front just above the middle line dividing white and red on the ball. One with a fire symbol. One with a water symbol. And the last with a lightning bolt symbol. "I present to you four choices: Chikorita, the leaf pokemon. Cyndaquil, the fire pokemon. Totodile, the water pokemon. Or Mareep, the electric pokemon. Each pokemon is strong in it's own way and has a personality to match. Which would you like?" The professor waited calmly as sometimes this was not as easy as just spouting out a name. This choice usually was a long drawn out thought over time. Sometimes trainers were not prepared or thought they were prepared and at the options presented found themselves stumbled.
Andy follows the professor into the next room where a table was situated, for now, the table looking like it had holes in it, four to be exact. That was before Elm pressed a button to make pokeballs rise from under the table, there were four as Elm explained, Chickorita, Totodile, Mareep and Cyndaquill, followed by the obvious question, which to choose. This took a good couple of minutes, Andy making sure not to take such a decision for granted as these were meant to be partners for the whole journey and then some.
"I'll take the Chickorita please," he answers after 3 minutes of thinking, happy with his choice. He would surely get along with the grass pokemon after a bit of time.
The wait was not a long as some for the trainer to decide on his pokemon. He had gone with the leak pokemon, Chikorita. "Respectable choice. Chikoritas tend to be less fiesty and more on the playful side. Here you are." Professor Elm placed the leaf etched pokeball into the trainers hand and descended the other three pokeballs back into the table. He turned to a nearby cabinet which housed a handful of other items which he pulled out and placed all into one bag for the trainer to take with him. "Along with your pokemon, these are some starting items. A few potions, pokeballs, full heals, a town map, pokenav, pokedex and an escape rope."
The professor would give the trainer some time to process all that he had been given and wait patiently for any questions to follow. Some did research before coming to the lab and were well prepared and ready to be on their way as soon as they received everything. Others needed some more information or wanted more information.
congratulations on your new Chikorita!
Chikorita
NICKNAME:your choice! GENDER:your choice! ABILITY: Overgrow - When Chikorita's HP Gets Low, It's Grass type attack's power is multiplied by 1.5. LEVEL: 005 EXP: 0/25 MOVE SET: tackle, growl, leech seed PERSONALITY:your choice! RECEIVED: Prof Elm's Lab @ lvl 5
Elm commented on the choice, noting that Chickorita tends to be a more docile and playful pokemon, the pokeball with the leaf design is then handed to him, "Thank you, Professor Elm,." he answers watching the other pokeballs descend back under the table before turning back to Elm who went to a cabinet and pulled out another large assortment of items, potions, pokeballs, a pokedex, a pokenav, and the town map, certainly better than walking around Jotho blindly. That could get...messy.
This truly marked the start of his journey in his home region, he took a few moments to organize the new items into his bag, being sure to be able pull out the potions at a moments notice, he didn't need his precious pokemon being too hurt from battles if he could help it. As for the Pokenav, Bob and Martha, his parents, still had pokedexes and by extension, pokenavs, they told him that it allows one to make phone calls to anyone that you have the number for. The Town Map and pokedex were kind of obvious, that left only the escape rope, "What does an escape rope do sir?" he asks

As they stood there a few feet from each other, the professor watched as Andy placed his new belongings into his travel bag. An unexpected follow-up question caught Professor Elm a little offguard, starting off his speech stumbling slightly. "O-oh the Escape Rope? It is an item that allows you to quickly reach the entrance to a cave if you get lost." He had hoped that answer was satisfying to the young man's question. There weren't going to be many times, if at all, that he would need to use it but they handed them out as a sort of safety item.
Not wanting to rush along the trainer, Elm began twiddling his thumbs behind his back awaiting any more questions that he may have. There was a lot to be learned in the pokemon world but the best advice would be to get out there and experience it. "Oh and you can always call me on your Pokenav if you ever need." Just a reminder that he would be a call away for any questions that may arise that he had forgotten to ask in the lab.
